Rome & The Greek Islands July Blyth Academy International Summers Program

VOLUNTEER ABROAD IN PERU

About This Program

Peru is world-renowned for its ancient archaeological sites, including the famed Machu Picchu, and for its vibrant culture.

We’ll begin our adventure in Cusco in the southern Andes, a startling contrast of bustling lively markets within an ancient city. Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire and reflects its rich history with illuminating museums, striking architecture, and Inca ruins. For the first few days, we’ll acclimatize to the altitude of the Andes before exploring the region on mountain bikes.

Our volunteer projects will begin in the San Sebastian district with Helping Hands Cusco, a local NGO that works to improve the living standards of underprivileged children, families and community members. In our free time, we will see exquisite sunsets over the peaks of the Andes, explore Incan sites, experience Peruvian culture, and taste the delicious cuisine.

Then we’ll go to the town of Aguas Calientes to visit the magnificent Machu Picchu. Nestled in lush cloud forest and stone cliff s in the upper Amazon basin, Machu Picchu was once an important trade hub for the Incas, and its ornate stonework and more than 200 structures also suggest it was a place of ceremony. We’ll get to decide for ourselves what this archaeological site once held for Incan civilization.

Finally, we’ll return to Cusco to absorb the incredible encounters we’ve experienced in our Peruvian adventure, and celebrate with a farewell banquet.

Only students aged 15-19 are eligible for this community service program.
